"De Oppresso Liber"
Letter to the Editor by Mathew Lengyel
A man is running for the office of Lieutenant Governor of the State of Wisconsin named Nick Polce and I would like to take this opportunity to tell you a little about him and what he represents. He is a former member of the 10th Special Forces group of the US Army, a small business owner, proud father and devoted husband but it is his experience in the Army that I would like to focus on the most. Our modern green berets are an eclectic combination: equal parts teacher, warrior-poet, mountaineer and diplomat. The Army devotes significant resources to make these people a “jack of all trades” but recruits the best & follows through in their training to literally make them “a master of all.” President John F. Kennedy created this caste of soldier during the Cold War and tasked them with the primary mission to train and equip indigenous forces to resist oppression and instability abroad. Given our politics domestically - I cannot imagine a better person to safeguard this important public position for the people of Wisconsin.
The motto of the Special Forces community is “De Oppresso Liber” or in English: “to free the oppressed.” This is who we are as Americans: a whole nation of escaped and freed slaves, former subjects to a foreign king, who relish the opportunity to go back into the world and give others the same opportunities our forefathers afforded us through their courage, blood and sacrifices during the revolutionary war. People like Nick Polce understand this perspective and have placed themselves at great personal risk to safeguard the liberty, freedom of sovereignty of the American people. This is the guy we need in office to safeguard the future of our nation so our children can inherit what we did.
As a teacher in our public schools, I watched only the exact wrong narrative being taught to our children about our country. Around 95% of public school teachers vote for and support either Democratic candidates or far-left candidates for political office. When teaching about the origins of this nation - these teachers always frame our nation in a marxist narrative that focuses only on the American institution of slavery, the massacre of Native American Indians or capitalistic exploitation of the poor. Many of these “teachers” have never stepped their feet into the third world to see what reality looks like today for a woman in an Islamic nation, a working man in Asia or a child in Africa.
The truth, as it should be taught in our schools, is that until we made coal our slave - almost every nation had to use some form of slavery or people would starve when winter (or the dry season) came. Innovation contributed far more to liberating slaves then any leftist-inspired revolution and America was uniquely responsible for ending the international slave trade itself. After the conclusion of our civil war here (where Northern Union forces smashed the Confederate institution of Slavery in the South) - the US government cooperated with England to enact a naval blockade off the West Coast of Africa. US and British ships attacked slave ships, impounded their crews, emancipated captured slaves back to Africa and burned their vessels for almost 20 years to shut down this system of bondage.
The true nature of American history is that of the liberator. When the national socialist Nazi party in Germany and Imperial Japan embarked on world domination, we aided our British brothers in their time of need, provided weapons and material to our allies overseas and sent our sons to completely destroy the war-making capabilities of both. When the Soviet Union & Communists in Asia seized entire nations and enslaved their people - we led the way in a 50 year effort to blunt their efforts and allow free people to stay free. This is the identity of the American when it is put in a historical context that isn’t written by someone who despises Western culture & it is about time to make patriotism & national service “fire” amongst our young people again.
Those young people need an example to follow & Nick Polce fits the bill. Please give him your vote for Lieutenant Governor on August 11th.
