'The Assassination of Charlie Kirk & the Evolution of Political Violence on the Left Wing'
Letter to the Editor sent in by Mathew Lengyel.
"The murder of Charlie Kirk on September 10th, 2025 is still being celebrated by leftists on social media and this is a reflection of not only the modern left but also the ideology they believe in. Democrat rhetoric has supported a general progression towards extremism and an open endorsement of political violence going back to the conclusion of the American Civil War and the rise of the KKK in the South. The founding principles of the Republican Party were anti-slavery, limited government and personal freedom/responsibility. The people fighting for the institution of slavery and opposing the civil rights movement were the Dixecrats and no other than the Democrat Party.
The Democrats have always utilized their monopoly of political violence to “kill the messenger” because they literally cannot engage with or compete against the ideas pushed forward by conservatives and Republicans directly. Leftists fundamentally believe that if they can “kill the messenger" - this roughly translates into them killing the message by intimidating their political opponents out of the marketplace of ideas. They will accomplish no such thing through their blatant adoption of this authoritarian mindset. They failed with President Donald Trump (repeatedly) and they will fail with Charlie Kirk because their brutality cannot stop the message.
The assassination of this political activist and family man (Charlie Kirk) is the final metastasizing of cancel-culture back into its domestic terrorist roots. Just the idea of “canceling” or getting someone fired for an unpopular opinion should have given anyone with more than a pre-pubescent ability for foresight some serious pause. This anti-free speech tendency has been actively promoted by the talking heads of “MS-DNC” into further blatant violence as they encouraged their audience to: “punch a Nazi” by adopting the motto of ANTIFA, a literal domestic terrorist group.
You see no modern equivalent in the political or social right wing of American politics in the modern Trump era. There is no Republican equivalent to elected democrats rationalizing & cheering on the murder of the Insurance CEO Brian Thompson by Luigi Mangione (for example), who has been embraced & regarded as a folk hero & sex-symbol in left-wing circles. Politically-motivated violence is universally condemned on the right wing while it is tacitly encouraged in a disingenuous tongue-in-cheek way on the left as they defend our nation’s enemies and castigate its people across the board.
This evolution towards adopting outright political terrorism is not a uniquely American phenomenon - it is a defining feature of left wing authoritarianism abroad. We have seen Russian FSB operatives poison foreign detractors living in other nations using polonium in order to silence them. The Chinese disappear literally anybody in their orbit who makes trouble for the communist party in Asia. Islamists hunt anybody who criticizes their religion across even Europe now. Finally we have Western Marxists following suit here in America by returning to their roots from the early 1900s: outright assassinations and bombings of political actors. All said, the assassination of Charlie will not silence us. And democrat party rhetoric will not be successful in its attempt to cancel out our voices. If anything, our collective voice will be louder and more profound in its boldness going forward. In one voice, we now proclaim FREEDOM."
